The monument of cultivated area in Machiya

Machiya had been suffering many floods of Ibo River or Nakagaichi River for a long time. Whenever a flood occured, the fields became riverbeds or wastelands. People in the village were forced to do many works to repaire. Because of repetition like this, the fields in Machiya weren't good for rice fields. They dreamed that the fields wound become a rice field and improve them as double cropping fields. But they needed much money to do it. They consulted with themselves many times, and decided to cultivate the fields, and selected the members to do it. They dag fields with picking axes , and carried sand with straw basket. They did by their own hands and shoulders. At last, the works finished in 1909 , and the fields chaged to fine rice fields.
