Funatsu is famous for producing traditional Japanese tiled roofs.
The tiled roofs were started by Mr. Mataemon Kobayashi, who was a government engineer.
He built his tile kiln in Funatstu many years ago.

Of course, the roofs of our school are made of tile. Our school is located near Bantan tollroad. This is the picture of the old roof tile factory.
Although this factory is broken down, tiled roofs are still produced in the big factory near here.

In the Yahata area of Funatsu town, there is a shiitake mushroom farm.
The forest is a good secret place for finding insects and beetles.
But these are many keep off signs because of the special trees and Shiitake mushrooms.

Lots of lotus flowers grow at Kurobo-pond in Niiro. There is a lot of fish in the pond.
We often go together to fish for black bass. Once we catch snakes instead of fish.
When we cut its belly out come a gross dead rat. There are lots of reservoirs for agriculture in Funatsu. Rice growing is very popular here.

But now government talks about "Gentan" a lot. "Gentan" means cutting back on growing rice. So sometimes farmers plant only half their field with rice or they might plant other crops than rice.
Usually we, the 6th graders of Funatsu elementary school, plant a small field of rice through the courtesy of some farmers in town.
It is real hard work in June when we planted the seedlings in the field.
The plants grow and in the fall we harvested our own rice. That is hard, too. But it was fun to make rice cakes for new year's celebration, and they tasted very good.

This year, our plot was in Gentan, so we couldn't plant rice. We didn't have to work in the field but we felt a little sad.
